The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) has intensified calls for stronger collaboration between the media and security institutions as part of efforts to promote national peace, security, and inclusive governance in Nigeria.
This appeal was made during a courtesy visit by the association to the Commissioner of Police, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command, CP Ahmed Mohammed, at the Command Headquarters in Abuja, ahead of the highly anticipated Women in Security Summit and Awards (WINSEC) 2026, scheduled to hold on June 30, 2026.
Speaking during the visit on behalf of NAWOJ National Chairperson, Hajia Aisha Ibrahim, the Chairperson of the Contact and Mobilization Sub-Committee of WINSEC and NAWOJ FCT Chairperson, Comrade Bassey Ita-Ikpang, expressed appreciation to the Police Commissioner for granting the delegation audience despite his demanding official schedule.
She noted that the visit was aimed at formally informing the FCT Police Command about the forthcoming WINSEC Summit and Awards, an initiative organized by NAWOJ National in partnership with the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), media organizations, and Crime Reporters Global Nigeria.
According to Comrade Ita-Ikpang, WINSEC — an acronym for Women in Security Summit — is conceived as a strategic platform designed to foster dialogue, strengthen institutional partnerships, and deepen the inclusion and recognition of women within
Nigeria’s security architecture.
She explained that the summit will convene major stakeholders from security agencies, government institutions, civil society groups, policy circles, and the media to deliberate on pressing issues bordering on national security, peacebuilding, leadership, gender inclusion, and sustainable national development.
“The summit is not just another event; it is a movement aimed at amplifying the voices and contributions of women in security conversations while celebrating outstanding individuals and institutions that have played significant roles in promoting peace, safety, and societal stability,” she stated.
Hajia Aisha Ibrahim, through her representative, commended the Nigeria Police Force for remaining one of the security institutions closest to the people, especially in addressing grassroots security concerns across the country.
She particularly praised the FCT Command under the leadership of CP Ahmed Mohammed for demonstrating professionalism, strategic coordination, courage, and commitment in tackling security challenges within the Federal Capital Territory.
Describing the Commissioner’s leadership style as impactful and inspiring, she noted that his policing approach has continued to strengthen public trust and confidence among residents, stakeholders, and members of the media community.
NAWOJ further appealed for the support and partnership of the FCT Police Command towards ensuring a successful and hitch-free WINSEC Summit and Awards, stressing that the endorsement and institutional backing of the Police would greatly enhance the credibility and impact of the programme.
Responding, CP Ahmed Mohammed lauded the leadership of NAWOJ for conceptualizing the WINSEC Summit and Awards initiative, describing it as timely and commendable in advancing national development and inclusive security engagement.
The Commissioner also appreciated the association for finding him worthy of recognition and assured the delegation of the full support of the FCT Police Command, particularly in the area of security provision during the summit.
He pledged that adequate measures would be put in place to guarantee the safety of participants, invited guests, and NAWOJ members expected in Abuja for the event.
CP Mohammed further reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to sustaining productive collaboration with NAWOJ and supporting initiatives that contribute to peacebuilding, national security, and social development.
The visit ended on a cordial note, with both parties expressing optimism about building stronger partnerships between the media and security agencies in advancing national unity, peace, and inclusive governance.
