Landmark election hailed as a victory for merit, inclusion, and the growing influence of women in Nigeria’s professional institutions.
The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council has hailed the election of Mrs. Oyinkansola Badejo-Okusanya, SAN, as the 33rd President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), describing her emergence as a historic achievement that marks a new chapter for leadership, inclusion, and gender representation within Nigeria’s legal profession.
In a congratulatory statement issued by the Chairman of the NUJ FCT Council, Comrade Grace Ike, the Council described Mrs. Badejo-Okusanya’s emergence as the first woman democratically elected to lead the NBA as a watershed moment for the legal community and a powerful affirmation that competence, integrity, excellence, and visionary leadership transcend gender.
According to the Council, the historic election is far more than a personal accomplishment. It represents a national triumph for women, young professionals, and advocates of merit-based leadership, reflecting the steady dismantling of barriers that have historically limited women’s representation at the highest levels of professional and institutional leadership.
The Council noted that the development resonates strongly within the NUJ FCT, where Comrade Grace Ike recently made history as the first female Chairman in the Council’s 43-year existence. Together, both milestones underscore a growing national embrace of inclusive leadership and equal opportunities driven by merit, capacity, and performance.
“The emergence of two women to lead two of Nigeria’s foremost professional bodies within such a short period sends a powerful message about the future of leadership in our country,” the statement noted.
“It demonstrates that our institutions are increasingly embracing competence, excellence, and vision above all else.
These achievements will undoubtedly inspire countless young women to pursue leadership roles and contribute meaningfully to national development.”
The NUJ FCT also commended the Nigerian Bar Association for its enduring contributions to democratic governance, constitutionalism, the protection of fundamental human rights, and the promotion of justice and the rule of law in Nigeria.
Expressing confidence in the incoming NBA President, the Council stated that Mrs. Badejo-Okusanya’s distinguished legal career, wealth of experience, and proven leadership capacity position her to strengthen the Association’s legacy while championing reforms that will further enhance public trust in the legal profession and the administration of justice.
The Council further reiterated its commitment to fostering stronger collaboration between the media and the legal profession in advancing democracy, accountability, press freedom, human rights, and good governance in Nigeria.
As Mrs. Badejo-Okusanya prepares to assume office, the NUJ FCT expressed optimism that her tenure will be remembered for transformational leadership, professional excellence, institutional growth, and expanded opportunities for future generations of legal practitioners and women leaders across the country.
