President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed renowned academic and former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Professor Oluwatoyin Temitayo Ogundipe, as the new Chairman of the Governing Board of the National Universities Commission (NUC), in a move aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s higher education system and advancing academic excellence.
Professor Ogundipe succeeds Emeritus Professor Olufemi Raphael Aina, who resigned from the position less than a year after his appointment. Professor Aina had been appointed by President Tinubu in July 2025, while the NUC Governing Board was inaugurated in November of the same year.
The appointment of Professor Ogundipe is widely regarded as a strategic decision, given his distinguished record in university administration, research, and educational leadership. As Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos from 2017 to 2022, he spearheaded several reforms and initiatives that enhanced the institution’s academic profile, research capacity, and global visibility.
A respected scholar and Professor of Botany, Ogundipe possesses extensive expertise in molecular plant taxonomy, biosystematics, ethnobotany, cytogenetics, forensic botany, and ecological conservation. He earned his doctorate degree in Botany from Obafemi Awolowo University and later obtained a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Lagos, combining scientific excellence with managerial competence.
Currently serving as the Pro-Chancellor of Redeemer’s University, Ede, Osun State, Professor Ogundipe has built an impressive reputation in academia and public service. He is a Fellow of several prestigious professional bodies, including the Nigerian Academy of Science, the Linnaean Society of London, and the Royal Society of Biology, London.
His contributions to scientific development and innovation have also seen him serve as President of the Botanical Society of Nigeria and Chairman of the Lagos State Science, Research and Innovation Council (LASRIC), among other notable positions.
As Chairman of the NUC Governing Board, Professor Ogundipe is expected to provide strategic oversight for Nigeria’s university regulatory system, with particular emphasis on improving institutional funding, enhancing research output, promoting global competitiveness, strengthening quality assurance mechanisms, and ensuring academic stability across the nation’s universities.
The appointment underscores President Tinubu’s commitment to revitalising the education sector under the Renewed Hope Agenda. The administration expects Professor Ogundipe to leverage his wealth of experience and leadership acumen to deepen reforms that will expand access to quality education, uphold academic integrity, and position Nigerian universities among the leading institutions globally.
Observers believe his appointment comes at a critical time when the Nigerian university system is grappling with challenges ranging from funding constraints and infrastructure deficits to the need for greater innovation, research excellence, and international relevance.
With his proven track record in academic leadership and institutional development, stakeholders are optimistic that Professor Ogundipe’s stewardship of the NUC Governing Board will contribute significantly to shaping a more vibrant, competitive, and globally respected university system for Nigeria.
