The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has confirmed the successful release of a group of Nigerian girls who were detained in Mauritius, bringing an end to an incident that sparked concern among Nigerians at home and abroad.
The Commission announced that the young women are safe and currently en route to Nigeria after being released through coordinated diplomatic efforts involving Nigerian authorities and the country’s diplomatic mission in Mauritius.
In a statement issued by the Head of Media, Public Relations and Protocols Unit of NiDCOM, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Commission, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, disclosed that NiDCOM worked closely with the relevant Nigerian Embassy to engage Mauritian authorities and facilitate the girls’ release.
According to the statement, the young women have already departed Mauritius and are presently in Nairobi, Kenya, from where they are expected to complete their journey back to Nigeria.
Expressing relief over the positive outcome, Dabiri-Erewa commended the collaborative efforts of all parties involved in resolving the matter. She noted that the welfare, dignity and safety of Nigerians abroad remain at the heart of the Commission’s mandate.
“We are pleased that the girls have been released and are safely on their way home,” she said, while expressing hope that they would be willing to share details of their experiences upon arrival in Nigeria. Such information, she explained, would assist ongoing investigations, support necessary interventions and contribute to the development of stronger safeguards for Nigerians travelling and living abroad.
The NiDCOM Chairman stressed that the Commission remains committed to protecting the rights and interests of Nigerians in the diaspora, particularly vulnerable individuals who may encounter challenges while seeking opportunities outside the country.
The incident has once again highlighted the importance of effective diplomatic engagement and international cooperation in addressing issues involving Nigerian citizens overseas. It has also renewed calls for greater awareness among young Nigerians about the risks associated with irregular migration, deceptive recruitment schemes and unsafe travel arrangements.
Dabiri-Erewa assured Nigerians that the Commission would continue to collaborate with diplomatic missions, foreign governments and relevant stakeholders to ensure that Nigerians abroad receive timely assistance whenever necessary. She further emphasized that proactive measures are being strengthened to prevent similar incidents and improve support systems for citizens outside the country’s borders.
The Commission noted that its intervention aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which places significant emphasis on the welfare, protection and empowerment of Nigerians both within the country and across the global diaspora.
As the girls make their way home, their safe return serves as a reminder of the critical role diplomatic institutions play in safeguarding citizens beyond national borders. It also underscores the need for continued vigilance, international cooperation and robust support mechanisms to protect Nigerians pursuing opportunities around the world.
