The Postmaster General and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST), Mrs. Tola Odeyemi, has reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to transforming Nigeria’s digital ecosystem through the implementation of the National Digital Postcode System, describing it as one of NIPOST’s most significant reform initiatives.
Speaking on the strategic partnership between NIPOST and the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), Odeyemi noted that postal organisations around the world have evolved beyond traditional mail delivery services to become critical enablers of digital inclusion, e-commerce growth, national addressing systems and efficient public service delivery.
According to her, NIPOST’s extensive nationwide network and statutory mandate place the organisation in a unique position to spearhead the development and adoption of a modern, technology-driven national addressing framework capable of supporting Nigeria’s rapidly expanding digital economy.
She explained that the National Digital Postcode System is designed to provide accurate, standardised and verifiable location data that will improve service delivery across multiple sectors, including governance, security, healthcare, financial services, logistics and emergency response.
Odeyemi further assured Nigerians that the implementation of the initiative and the broader partnership with NIMC would be guided by internationally recognised standards on data privacy, cybersecurity, institutional accountability and responsible data governance.
“This is not simply about connecting databases,” she stated. “It is about creating real value for citizens by ensuring that every Nigerian can be identified, located, reached and served efficiently, regardless of where they live.”
Industry observers believe the collaboration represents a major milestone in Nigeria’s digital transformation journey, as it seeks to integrate identity management and addressing systems into a seamless framework capable of supporting both public and private sector innovation.
Both NIPOST and NIMC expressed confidence that the partnership will strengthen interoperability across government institutions, improve the quality and accessibility of public services, and enhance the effectiveness of Nigeria’s Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI).
The agencies also maintained that the initiative aligns with the Federal Government’s broader vision of building a secure, efficient and inclusive digital economy under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. By leveraging technology to bridge service gaps and improve citizen engagement, the collaboration is expected to accelerate socio-economic development while positioning Nigeria as a leading digital economy on the African continent.
