The Honourable Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (rtd), OFR, has reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to deepening its longstanding defence partnership with the United States, with particular emphasis on counter-terrorism, intelligence cooperation, advanced military technology and the modernisation of the Armed Forces of Nigeria.

General Musa made this commitment during an official visit to the Nigerian Embassy in Washington, D.C., where he held strategic discussions with the Nigerian Ambassador to the United States, His Excellency Ambassador Kayode Are, on Monday, August 17, 2026.

The high-level engagement provided an opportunity to review Nigeria’s evolving security priorities and explore avenues for strengthening bilateral defence cooperation at a time of significant geopolitical and security challenges across the Sahel.

Technology at the Heart of Modern Defence

A major focus of the discussions was the growing importance of technology in Nigeria’s fight against terrorism and other security threats. General Musa underscored the strategic value of U.S. military technology, particularly advanced unmanned aerial systems and satellite-based intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities.

According to the Minister, access to sophisticated technology and enhanced intelligence capabilities remains critical to improving situational awareness, strengthening operational effectiveness and supporting the Armed Forces of Nigeria in confronting emerging threats.

He stressed, however, that Nigeria’s international defence engagements are firmly anchored on the principles of national sovereignty, mutual respect and the protection of Nigeria’s strategic interests.

General Musa reiterated Nigeria’s policy of diversifying its international defence partnerships while preserving and strengthening its traditional alliances. The approach, he noted, is designed to ensure that Nigeria can draw on a broad range of expertise, technology and strategic cooperation in addressing its complex security environment.

Diplomatic Support for Military Modernisation

Welcoming the Defence Minister to the Embassy, Ambassador Kayode Are commended the ongoing security-sector reforms of the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR.

The Ambassador reaffirmed the Embassy’s readiness to facilitate the diplomatic and institutional channels required to strengthen defence cooperation between Nigeria and the United States.

Particular attention was given to technical training, intelligence sharing and equipment support for the Nigerian military—areas considered essential to building a more capable, technologically enabled and professionally equipped Armed Forces.

The discussions also highlighted the importance of sustained institutional collaboration between Nigeria’s defence authorities and relevant U.S. partners in order to translate strategic agreements into practical support and measurable operational outcomes.

A Shared Security Challenge in the Sahel

Beyond bilateral relations, the meeting examined the rapidly evolving security landscape across the Sahel.

The two sides recognised the increasingly interconnected nature of regional security threats and the need for stronger collaborative frameworks among countries confronting terrorism, violent extremism and other transnational security challenges.

The discussions underscored Nigeria’s strategic role in regional security and the importance of coordinated efforts, intelligence cooperation and stronger partnerships in developing sustainable responses to extremist threats.

Recognising Nigeria’s Defence Diplomats

Following the strategic engagement, General Musa inspected the Embassy’s Defence Section, where he commended the Defence Attaché, Air Commodore Valentine Oreaki, and his team for their efforts in advancing Nigeria’s defence interests in the United States.

The Minister charged the personnel to sustain the highest standards of professionalism, discipline, integrity and dedication in the discharge of their responsibilities.

He emphasised that effective defence diplomacy remains an important component of Nigeria’s broader national-security strategy, particularly as the country expands its international partnerships and seeks new opportunities for military cooperation, capacity development and technological advancement.

A Week of Strategic Engagement

The Washington visit formed part of a weeklong series of high-level engagements undertaken by the Honourable Minister as a member of a Federal Government delegation led by the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu.

The engagements reflect Nigeria’s renewed emphasis on strategic international partnerships as an important pillar of its national-security architecture.

For Nigeria, the message from Washington is clear: strengthening the Armed Forces requires not only operational courage and professional capacity, but also access to modern technology, reliable intelligence, effective defence diplomacy and carefully calibrated international partnerships.

As Nigeria continues to confront a complex and changing security environment, the deepening of its defence relationship with the United States represents another step towards building a more technologically capable, resilient and strategically positioned Armed Forces.
