The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has recorded a significant nationwide improvement in road safety during the 2026 Eid-el-Kabir celebrations, posting remarkable reductions in road traffic crashes, injuries, and the number of persons involved in accidents across the country.
The achievement, described as one of the Corps’ most successful festive season operations in recent years, underscores the effectiveness of its strategic traffic management initiatives, intensive public enlightenment campaigns, strengthened enforcement activities, and rapid emergency response measures deployed before, during, and after the Sallah festivities.
According to the operational report released by the Corps, road traffic crashes declined by 25.65 per cent, dropping from 191 cases recorded during the 2025 Eid-el-Kabir period to 142 crashes in 2026.
The report further revealed a substantial reduction in the number of people involved in road crashes, which fell by 22 per cent, from 1,364 persons in 2025 to 1,064 persons in 2026. Similarly, the number of injured persons decreased by 25.35 per cent, declining from 576 injuries recorded in 2025 to 430 in 2026.
The figures represent hundreds of lives saved and countless families spared the trauma, pain, and economic losses often associated with road traffic crashes during peak travel periods.
The impressive performance has been attributed to the Corps’ comprehensive operational strategy, which included the strategic deployment of personnel and operational assets along major highways and critical traffic corridors nationwide. Other measures implemented during the special patrol included round-the-clock surveillance, intelligence-driven enforcement, motorised patrols, prompt rescue operations, traffic control interventions, stakeholder collaborations, and sustained public sensitisation campaigns aimed at promoting safer road use.
Speaking on the outcome of the operation, the Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, praised the dedication, professionalism, and resilience demonstrated by FRSC personnel, Special Marshals, and partner agencies throughout the exercise.
He noted that the results validate the impact of proactive planning, effective enforcement, and collective commitment to road safety.
According to him, the significant decline in crashes and injuries demonstrates that sustained road safety interventions can substantially reduce the burden of road traffic accidents and improve public safety across the nation.
The Corps Marshal also expressed appreciation to motorists, transport operators, passengers, and other road users who complied with traffic regulations and embraced the Corps’ safety advisories during the festive season.
While celebrating the success recorded, Mohammed reaffirmed the FRSC’s commitment to building on the gains achieved by strengthening operational strategies, expanding stakeholder engagement, and improving emergency response capabilities.
He stressed that road safety should not be viewed as a seasonal responsibility but as a continuous national obligation requiring the cooperation of all Nigerians.
“As we celebrate these encouraging results, we must remain committed to maintaining safe road-use practices beyond festive periods. Road safety is a shared responsibility, and every road user has a role to play in protecting lives,” he stated.
The latest performance further reinforces the FRSC’s determination to reduce road crashes, injuries, and fatalities across Nigeria, while ensuring safer travel experiences for millions of road users nationwide.
