The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Chapter of the Standup for Women Society (SWS) has called on governments at all levels to ensure free and compulsory education for every Nigerian child, describing education as the bedrock for national development and a brighter future for the country.
The group made the call in a statement issued on Tuesday to commemorate the 2026 International Children’s Day celebration, where it congratulated children across Nigeria and described them as a precious heritage deserving protection, care and equal opportunities.
The organisation stressed that every child, irrespective of social status, ethnicity or religion, must have access to quality education and a safe environment that supports learning and development.
According to the statement, Children’s Day should serve as a reminder of the collective responsibility of parents, governments, schools, religious institutions and the wider society to nurture children and secure their future.
The group noted that Nigerian children remain the hope of the nation and must be guided with sound moral values, discipline, patriotism and access to opportunities that would prepare them for leadership and responsible citizenship.
The society also urged children to remain committed to their education and avoid social vices capable of destroying their future, including drug abuse, cultism, cybercrime and violence.
It encouraged young people to embrace integrity, creativity, hard work and national unity as key virtues necessary for personal growth and national progress.
Speaking further, the Chairperson of the SWS FCT Chapter, Lib Mina Daniels, emphasised the need for stronger government policies that would protect children’s rights and improve access to education, healthcare and social welfare services, especially for vulnerable children.
Daniels stated that investing in children remained critical to building a peaceful, productive and prosperous Nigeria.
Also speaking, the Secretary of the chapter, Lib Princess Joy Idam, commended parents, teachers, caregivers and development partners for their sacrifices and commitment towards raising children despite the current economic challenges facing the country.
She called on all stakeholders to renew their commitment towards building a society where every child can dream, learn and succeed without discrimination or neglect.
“As we celebrate our children today, we must renew our commitment towards building a Nigeria where every child can dream, learn and succeed irrespective of background, ethnicity or religion,” the statement added.
The group reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for the rights, protection and empowerment of women and children across the Federal Capital Territory and Nigeria at large.
