The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Chapter, has congratulated its esteemed Patron and Director-General of the Raw Materials Research and Development Council (RMRDC), Professor Nnanyelugo Ike-Muonso, on his election as the Sub-Saharan Africa Representative on the Executive Board of the World Association of Industrial and Technological Research Organisations (WAITRO).

The association described the appointment, secured at the WAITRO Summit in Istanbul, Türkiye, as a remarkable personal achievement and a significant victory for Nigeria and the African continent, reflecting Professor Ike-Muonso’s outstanding leadership, professional competence and commitment to advancing research, innovation and industrial development.

Established in 1970 under the auspices of the United Nations, WAITRO is a global network of industrial and technological research organisations spanning approximately 70 countries. His election to its Executive Board presents a strategic opportunity for Nigeria and Sub-Saharan Africa to influence global research priorities, strengthen international partnerships, promote technology transfer and advance homegrown solutions to industrial challenges.

NAWOJ FCT noted that the recognition underscores Professor Ike-Muonso’s remarkable contributions to research, innovation and the development of Nigeria’s raw materials sector.

Under his leadership at RMRDC, the Council has intensified efforts towards adding value to Nigeria’s abundant natural resources, strengthening local industrial capacity, promoting research commercialisation and advancing indigenous technologies as drivers of economic growth and employment generation.

The association observed that his vision of transforming Nigeria from a raw-material-export-dependent economy into a knowledge-driven, value-adding industrial powerhouse reflects the kind of leadership and strategic thinking Africa urgently needs to achieve sustainable development.

NAWOJ FCT also commended the management and staff of RMRDC for their dedication, professionalism and collective contributions to the Council’s growing relevance and visibility on the global research and development stage.

According to the association, Professor Ike-Muonso’s election is not only a personal accomplishment but also a testament to the institution’s increasing influence in the international research community.

As an organisation committed to promoting women’s advancement, professional excellence and national development, NAWOJ FCT expressed pride in identifying with a Patron whose achievements continue to inspire confidence in Nigerian leadership and demonstrate the importance of investing in research, innovation and institutional development.

“Dear Professor, you have earned this recognition, and we celebrate you,” the association stated, wishing him a successful and impactful tenure on the WAITRO Executive Board.

NAWOJ FCT expressed optimism that his new position would open greater opportunities for Nigeria, amplify Africa’s voice in global scientific governance and accelerate the continent’s quest for industrial self-reliance.

The association concluded by congratulating Professor Ike-Muonso and the entire RMRDC family on the achievement.

Together, we lead!

Signed:
Comrade Bassey Ita-Ikpang
Chairperson, NAWOJ FCT
