The Honourable Minister of Defence has reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening the Nigerian Navy through increased support, modern technology, and enhanced operational capabilities as the Service marked its 70th anniversary with a grand Ceremonial Sunset Dinner and Awards Night in Lagos.

Speaking as the Special Guest of Honour at the event, which concluded a week-long celebration of the Navy’s seven decades of service, the Minister described the Nigerian Navy as a professional, resilient, and highly respected institution that has played a pivotal role in safeguarding the nation’s maritime interests and supporting national development.

The Minister emphasized that the future of maritime security depends on the adoption of cutting-edge technologies, including advanced surveillance systems, intelligence platforms, cyber defence tools, unmanned technologies, and data-driven operational capabilities.

According to him, emerging security challenges require a technologically advanced and interconnected naval force capable of responding effectively to threats within Nigeria’s maritime domain and across the Gulf of Guinea.

“The future of the Nigerian Navy lies in its ability to harness cutting-edge technology and strengthen collaboration with regional and international partners. A modern, technology-driven Navy will enhance maritime domain awareness and operational effectiveness and contribute significantly to collective security within the Gulf of Guinea and beyond,” he stated.

Reaffirming the Federal Government’s support, the Minister said efforts would continue to strengthen the Navy’s operational capacity to enable it to effectively protect maritime assets, secure national interests, and contribute to economic growth in line with its motto, “Onward Together.”

He commended the Chief of the Naval Staff, officers, ratings, and civilian personnel for their dedication and achievements over the past 70 years, while also appreciating Nigeria’s international partners for their continued cooperation in promoting maritime security and stability.

Highlighting the Navy’s role in driving national development, the Minister noted that its operations have significantly contributed to the growth of Nigeria’s blue economy through the protection of strategic sea routes, offshore oil and gas infrastructure, and other critical maritime assets.

He added that the Service has remained at the forefront of efforts to combat piracy, crude oil theft, illegal fishing, and other maritime crimes that threaten economic prosperity and national security.

Beyond maritime operations, the Minister acknowledged the Navy’s contributions to internal security efforts, noting its active support to sister services and other security agencies in maintaining peace and stability across the country.

These efforts, he said, have strengthened Nigeria’s sovereignty, boosted investor confidence, facilitated trade and commerce, and positioned the nation to maximize opportunities within its maritime sector.

The Minister also congratulated officers and ratings who received awards and special recognition during the event, including personnel honoured posthumously for their exceptional service and sacrifice.

“Through your dedication, professionalism, courage, and selfless service, you have upheld the highest traditions of the Nigerian Navy and inspired future generations of naval personnel. Tonight, we celebrate not only your individual accomplishments but also the collective spirit of excellence that continues to define and propel the Nigerian Navy forward,” he said.

Ceremonial Sunset: A Symbol of Duty and Continuity

A major highlight of the anniversary celebration was the Ceremonial Sunset, one of the most enduring traditions in naval service around the world. The ceremony symbolizes duty, honour, discipline, and the transition from one watch to another, underscoring the continuous vigilance that defines naval service.

As the Nigerian Navy commemorates 70 years of service, the ceremony provided an opportunity to reflect on decades of sacrifice, professionalism, and commitment to defending Nigeria’s maritime domain. The recognition of outstanding personnel during the event further reinforced a culture of excellence and inspired greater dedication across the Service.

The Ministry of Defence joined millions of Nigerians in celebrating the milestone and commended the officers, ratings, and civilian personnel of the Nigerian Navy for their unwavering contributions to the security, unity, and prosperity of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
