The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) are exploring a strategic partnership to integrate weather intelligence and climate information into military training, operational planning and national security preparedness.

The proposed collaboration emerged on Thursday, October 22, 2026, when NiMet’s Director-General and Chief Executive Officer, Professor Charles Anosike, received the NDA Academy Provost, Professor B.J. Ajibuah, during a courtesy visit to the agency’s headquarters in Abuja.

Discussions centred on leveraging meteorological expertise to strengthen military decision-making, improve operational planning and expand access to specialised weather and climate services.

Both institutions also explored opportunities for joint research, professional development, specialised training and knowledge exchange to enhance the technical capacity of their personnel.

To provide a sustainable framework for the proposed collaboration, the institutions considered developing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to define priority areas of cooperation and guide the implementation of mutually beneficial initiatives.

If formalised, the partnership could strengthen the application of weather and climate intelligence in military operations while promoting research, institutional development and technical knowledge-sharing.

The engagement highlights the growing importance of meteorological information in strategic planning and national security, particularly in improving preparedness and supporting informed decisions in weather-sensitive operations.

However, discussions remain at the exploratory stage, with no formal agreement confirmed.
