The Federal Capital Territory has unveiled a stunning new face to Nigeria’s capital with the official commissioning of the remodeled Abuja City Gate, a landmark transformation that combines architectural elegance, national symbolism and modern urban aesthetics. The revitalized monument, now complemented by a spectacular water fountain, is being celebrated as a world-class gateway befitting the status of Abuja as Africa’s foremost diplomatic and administrative capital.

Commissioning the project on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu described the remodeled City Gate as a powerful representation of Nigeria’s unity, diversity and collective aspirations. She noted that the national monument now stands proudly among the iconic gateways and public landmarks that define major capital cities across the globe.

According to the First Lady, Abuja occupies a unique place in Nigeria’s national life as the city where citizens from all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory converge in pursuit of shared goals and opportunities. As such, she said, the nation’s capital deserves an entrance that reflects its prestige, character and promise.

“This newly remodeled Abuja City Gate, with its beautiful water fountain representing the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, sends a clear message to every visitor arriving from the airport that they have entered a city founded on unity, diversity and shared aspirations,” she stated.

The centerpiece of the redevelopment is the impressive water fountain, whose design symbolizes the federation’s 36 states and the FCT. Beyond its visual appeal, the installation serves as a reminder of the nation’s collective identity and the enduring ideals that bind Nigerians together despite cultural, ethnic and regional differences.

Senator Tinubu emphasized that first impressions matter, particularly for a capital city that hosts foreign diplomats, international investors, government officials and tourists from around the world. She observed that the remodeled gateway offers visitors an immediate sense of Abuja’s growing sophistication and reinforces Nigeria’s commitment to urban excellence and national development.

The First Lady also commended the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Mr. Nyesom Wike, for his determination to transform Abuja’s physical landscape through strategic infrastructure and beautification projects. She described the commissioning as especially significant because it coincides with two important milestones—the third anniversary of President Tinubu’s administration and the 50th anniversary of the creation of the Federal Capital Territory.

Reflecting on the achievement, she remarked, “When you share a vision with a man of action, you see results. Minister Wike, you have proven once again to be a true driver of the Renewed Hope Agenda. Well done.”

Providing insight into the project’s origin, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike revealed that the transformation was inspired by a challenge from the First Lady herself. He recounted how Senator Tinubu repeatedly expressed concern that the existing City Gate did not adequately reflect the stature and prestige of Nigeria’s capital city.

According to Wike, her persistence prompted him to direct the Executive Secretary of the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) to develop a modern redesign capable of matching global standards. The renowned construction company, Julius Berger, was subsequently engaged to execute the ambitious vision.

“We must always tell ourselves the truth. This structure has been here for years, but many never imagined it could become what you see today. When the First Lady insisted that Abuja deserved a gateway befitting a national capital, we accepted the challenge and delivered this transformation,” Wike said.

The minister expressed satisfaction with the completed project, describing the remodeled City Gate as a landmark that will enhance Abuja’s image, strengthen civic pride and leave a lasting impression on visitors. He noted that the project forms part of a broader urban renewal strategy aimed at modernizing critical infrastructure, beautifying public spaces and elevating the city’s global profile.

Also speaking at the event, Minister of State for the FCT, Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, characterized the redevelopment as a visible symbol of the transformative changes currently taking place across the Federal Capital Territory under the Renewed Hope Agenda. She praised Senator Oluremi Tinubu for her unwavering support for initiatives that improve the quality of life of Nigerians and described her presence at the ceremony as both inspiring and significant.

Dr. Mahmoud stated that the remodeled City Gate represents far more than a physical structure. In her view, it embodies a new era of urban renewal, infrastructural advancement and national confidence. She added that the project demonstrates the administration’s commitment to creating a capital city that reflects Nigeria’s aspirations while providing residents and visitors with an environment worthy of the nation’s status.

As Abuja continues to expand as a hub for governance, diplomacy, commerce and culture, the newly transformed City Gate now stands as a proud symbol of progress, welcoming all who enter the city with a message of unity, excellence and hope. More than an architectural achievement, the landmark serves as a bold statement of Nigeria’s determination to build a capital city that inspires pride among its citizens and admiration from the global community.
