The growing influence of Nigerians in international leadership, healthcare, academia and corporate affairs has earned commendation from the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, who described their accomplishments as a source of national pride and a testament to the country’s wealth of talent.

Dabiri-Erewa said the achievements of Nigerians excelling in influential positions across the world demonstrated their capacity to contribute to global development through innovation, research, professional excellence and institutional leadership.

In a statement issued in Abuja on Monday, October 26, 2026, she linked the rising international profile of Nigerians to the strategic importance of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s 4Ds Foreign Policy Agenda, which comprises Development, Democracy, Demography and Diaspora.

According to her, the achievements of Nigerians abroad underscore the need for Nigeria to strengthen engagement with its diaspora community and create opportunities for its expertise, professional networks and international experience to contribute to national development.

“These achievements are a source of pride to Nigeria. They demonstrate that Nigerians, wherever they may reside, continue to contribute significantly to global progress,” she stated.

Nigerians Making Global Impact

Among the Nigerians whose accomplishments have attracted international attention are Dr. Zainab Shinkafi-Bagudu in international cancer control; Professor Ibrahim Abubakar in global epidemic preparedness; Dr. Bolu Ogunyemi in Canadian medical leadership; and Professor Christian Harrison in academic management.

Others include Ugwechi Amadi in global corporate strategy, Dr. Salamat Ahuoiza Aliu-Ibrahim in specialised neurosurgery, and Ifeanyi Umunna in student leadership at Harvard Law School.

Dabiri-Erewa noted that their achievements reflect the depth of Nigerian talent and the contributions citizens abroad continue to make across diverse professional fields.

She stressed that these accomplishments should inspire stronger collaboration between diaspora professionals and Nigerian institutions, particularly in healthcare, education, scientific research, technology, entrepreneurship and public policy.

Harnessing the Power of the 4Ds Agenda

Explaining the relevance of the President’s foreign policy framework, the NiDCOM chief said the Development pillar could benefit from diaspora professionals through knowledge transfer, investment, innovation and specialised expertise.

She explained that Democracy could be strengthened through the promotion of good governance, institutional development and democratic values.

The Demography pillar, she added, recognises Nigeria’s large, youthful and globally distributed population as a significant source of human capital, while Diaspora highlights the importance of mobilising the skills, resources and international networks of Nigerians living abroad.

According to her, effective implementation of the agenda requires deliberate mechanisms that connect Nigerians abroad with opportunities to contribute meaningfully to their home country’s development.

She called for increased professional mentorship, knowledge exchange, investment partnerships and institutional cooperation to transform individual successes into sustainable national benefits.

A Call to Inspire the Next Generation

Dabiri-Erewa also urged young Nigerians to draw inspiration from compatriots making a difference internationally, encouraging them to pursue excellence, integrity, innovation and dedication in their professional and public lives.

She reaffirmed NiDCOM’s commitment to identifying, documenting, celebrating and engaging Nigerians in the diaspora in support of the Federal Government’s development objectives.

“Our diaspora is not merely a community living beyond Nigeria’s sovereign boundaries; it is an invaluable reservoir of talent, experience, innovation, and opportunity,” she said.

The NiDCOM chief maintained that stronger engagement with Nigerians abroad would help improve the country’s global image, expand international partnerships and ensure that the expertise of diaspora professionals contributes more directly to national progress.

As Nigerians continue to distinguish themselves across international institutions and industries, the challenge, she suggested, is to build effective partnerships that convert their individual accomplishments into lasting benefits for the country.

For Nigeria, the growing global presence of its citizens represents not only a reason for celebration but also an opportunity to accelerate development by connecting world-class expertise with local priorities.
