In Nigeria’s evolving political landscape, where women’s participation in leadership continues to attract growing attention, Hajiya Zainab Abubakar Ibrahim, popularly known as Aunty Zee, stands out as a professional accountant, entrepreneur, political strategist and advocate for inclusive governance.

With over 25 years of experience spanning public administration, financial management, entrepreneurship, party politics and community development, she has built a professional profile that cuts across government institutions, political party administration and private enterprise.

Now emerging as a prospective deputy governor, Aunty Zee brings to the political conversation a blend of professional training, administrative experience, grassroots engagement and a commitment to expanding opportunities for women in leadership.

Her journey reflects a combination of professional development, political involvement and entrepreneurial initiative, underpinned by an ambition to contribute to governance and community advancement.

ROOTED IN A LEGACY OF PUBLIC SERVICE

Born on August 3 into the family of Alhaji Abubakar Ibrahim Sarki Ayukan Muri, OON, Hajiya Zainab comes from a family with a notable history of political participation and public service.

Her father was a former parliamentarian and held several political leadership positions, including Chairman of the National Party of Nigeria (NPN) in Gongola State, a leadership role in the National Republican Convention (NRC) in Taraba State, and involvement with the G-34 movement.

He also served as chairman and convener of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Taraba State and participated in the 1999 Constitutional Committee.

His family includes two distinguished senators and a former minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Growing up within a family associated with public affairs provided a background in which politics, leadership and public service were prominent features.

Hajiya Zainab is married to Engineer Bello Muhammed Unguwan Alkali, and their union is blessed with six children.

A PROFESSIONAL ACCOUNTANT WITH A FINANCE BACKGROUND

Beyond her political engagements, Aunty Zee has established a professional foundation in accounting, finance and administration.

She holds a Master of Business Administration (MBA) in Finance and Investment from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.

Her professional qualifications and affiliations include Certified National Accountant (CNA), Certified Public Accountant (CPA), membership of the Chartered Institute of Forensic and Certified Fraud Investigators of Nigeria (CIFCFIN), membership of the Institute of Chartered Economists of Nigeria (ICEN), and student membership of the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN).

These qualifications complement her experience in financial management, organisational administration and public-sector operations.

Her career reflects an intersection of financial expertise and leadership responsibilities, equipping her with experience relevant to institutional oversight, accountability and strategic planning.

FROM PUBLIC SERVICE TO POLITICAL LEADERSHIP

Hajiya Zainab’s public service career began at the Federal Medical Centre, Katsina, where she worked as a Revenue Accountant from 1999 to 2001.

She subsequently served in various units of the Accounts Department of the Federal Capital Territory Judiciary.

Her professional journey also took her to the Federal Ministry of Power, where she served as Special Assistant to the Honourable Minister on Transmission, and the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs, where she worked as Personal Assistant to the Honourable Minister.

These appointments exposed her to different aspects of public administration, ministerial operations and institutional coordination.

Her subsequent political engagements have expanded her involvement in party organisation, stakeholder relations, election preparation and women’s political participation.

AT THE HEART OF APC’S NATIONAL WOMEN’S LEADERSHIP

Aunty Zee currently serves as Deputy National Women Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and is a member of the party’s National Working Committee.

Her responsibilities include coordinating party activities, supporting election preparations, facilitating conflict resolution, managing aspects of party administration and communication, and strengthening party structures across Nigeria and within the diaspora.

The position places her within the party’s national leadership structure, where women’s mobilisation and participation remain important elements of political organisation.

Her experience in party administration also provides a platform for engaging women across different political and geographical constituencies.

CHAMPIONING WOMEN’S REPRESENTATION IN POLITICAL GOVERNANCE

One of Hajiya Zainab’s prominent leadership roles is her position as Deputy National Chairman of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), where she also serves as Executive Director of the Directorate of Women Affairs.

IPAC serves as an umbrella body for registered political parties in Nigeria, promoting democratic engagement, electoral advocacy, political dialogue and peaceful participation.

Within the organisation, Hajiya Zainab is credited with pioneering the IPAC twinning formula, an initiative designed to promote gender balance in political party leadership.

The concept advocates complementary male and female representation in executive leadership positions, with a male chairman paired with a female vice-chairman, or a female chairman paired with a male vice-chairman.

The initiative reflects her stated commitment to creating institutional pathways through which women can participate more meaningfully in political decision-making.

Rather than limiting women’s inclusion to political mobilisation, the approach seeks to encourage their presence within the structures where party policies, priorities and leadership decisions are shaped.

Her involvement in gender-related political advocacy positions her within ongoing conversations about affirmative action, equal opportunities and women’s representation in Nigeria’s democratic institutions.

PROVIDING OVERSIGHT IN THE HEALTH SECTOR

Hajiya Zainab also serves as Chairman of the Governing Board of the Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe.

The position carries responsibility for governance and institutional oversight, supporting the hospital’s effective administration in line with its mandate.

Her appointment brings her financial and administrative background into a critical public health institution, where accountability, strategic direction and effective management are essential.

The role further broadens her experience beyond party politics, extending her leadership responsibilities into the health sector.

AN ENTREPRENEUR WITH DIVERSE BUSINESS INTERESTS

Beyond public service and political leadership, Aunty Zee has pursued entrepreneurship through businesses spanning consultancy, catering, culinary training and event management.

Her ventures include:

  • Zed Consultancy Nigeria Limited
  • Zees Fingerlicks Catering Services
  • Foodville Cuisine & Event Management Services
  • Foodville Culinary School and Bakery
  • Aunty Zee Foundation

These ventures reflect interests in professional consultancy, food services, hospitality, skills development and philanthropy.

Her involvement in culinary education and business development also presents opportunities for skills acquisition and enterprise development, particularly within the hospitality and food-service sectors.

Through the Aunty Zee Foundation, she has established a platform associated with her philanthropic interests and community-oriented ambitions.

A LEADERSHIP PROFILE BUILT ON MULTIPLE FRONTIERS

Hajiya Zainab’s professional profile spans strategic planning, financial management, policy development, organisational leadership, stakeholder engagement, event coordination, grassroots mobilisation and governance.

Her experience across public institutions, political organisations and private enterprise provides a multifaceted background as she pursues a larger political role.

Her supporters may point to this combination of professional expertise, political participation and entrepreneurship as part of her appeal for higher public office.

However, the ultimate significance of any political ambition rests not only on experience and credentials but also on the capacity to translate them into policies, effective administration and measurable benefits for citizens.

THE ROAD TO THE DEPUTY GOVERNORSHIP

As Hajiya Zainab Abubakar Ibrahim emerges as a prospective deputy governor, her profile places professional competence, women’s political representation and public service at the centre of the conversation surrounding her political future.

Her years in public administration, national party leadership, inter-party engagement and entrepreneurship provide several dimensions to her experience.

Her advocacy for gender-balanced political leadership also speaks to the wider question of how Nigerian political institutions can create greater opportunities for women to participate in decision-making.

For Aunty Zee, the prospect of serving as deputy governor would represent another chapter in a career that has traversed accounting, government administration, entrepreneurship and political organisation.

Whether in public institutions, party structures or private enterprise, the defining test of leadership remains the ability to turn experience into meaningful outcomes.

Aunty Zee’s emerging political journey therefore presents an opportunity to examine the place of professional experience, inclusive leadership and women’s representation in shaping the next generation of public leadership in Nigeria.
