The atmosphere was solemn yet celebratory as family members, friends, political leaders, diplomats, clergy, women’s advocates and community stakeholders gathered in Abuja for a Night of Tribute in honour of Dr. Jophia Nanker Gupar, a woman whose life was defined by service, leadership, compassion and an unwavering commitment to empowering others.
For many in attendance, the gathering was more than a farewell. It was a reflection on a life that transcended boundaries, inspired communities and left an enduring imprint on women, youth and development initiatives across Nigeria and beyond.
As tributes flowed, one message echoed repeatedly throughout the hall: Dr. Jophia Gupar may be gone, but her legacy must continue.
A Woman Whose Influence Reached Beyond Borders
Born in Abwor-Dyis Village in Lankang District of Pankshin Local Government Area, Plateau State, Dr. Gupar rose from humble beginnings to become one of the most respected voices in youth development, women’s empowerment and community leadership.
Her passion for uplifting others led to the establishment of the Pan African Young Women Development Initiative (PAYWODI), through which she mentored young women, promoted leadership development and championed opportunities for social and economic advancement.
Over the years, she built an impressive record of service, holding strategic positions in national and international organizations. Her involvement with the Nigerian National Youth Award, the National Youth Council of Nigeria, the UN-Habitat Youth Network Nigeria and several women-focused initiatives positioned her as a respected advocate for inclusive development.
Beyond titles and accomplishments, however, many who knew her remembered a woman who genuinely cared about people.
“She believed in people before they believed in themselves,” one attendee remarked.
That quality, speakers noted, became the foundation of a lifetime dedicated to mentorship, advocacy and humanitarian service.
Dame Pauline Tallen Pays Tribute to a Protégé
Among the dignitaries present was former Minister of Women Affairs, Dame Pauline Tallen OFR, widely regarded as Dr. Gupar’s political mentor and one of the women who significantly influenced her leadership journey.
Speaking emotionally during the tribute session, Tallen described Dr. Gupar as a woman of conviction who pursued every cause she believed in with passion and determination.
She recalled Gupar’s commitment to advancing the cause of women and expressed hope that her passing would inspire greater efforts to improve the participation and representation of women in Nigerian politics.
For many attendees, the relationship between Tallen and Gupar symbolized the importance of mentorship among women leaders and the responsibility of one generation to prepare the next for leadership.
A Gathering of National and International Dignitaries
The significance of Dr. Gupar’s contributions was evident in the calibre of guests who attended the event.
Among them were His Excellency Mohamadou Musa Njie, Ambassador of the Republic of The Gambia to Nigeria, and Mr. Abdoulie Hydara, Deputy Head of Mission, whose presence highlighted the international relationships Dr. Gupar cultivated through her advocacy work and development initiatives.
The attendance of the diplomatic representatives reflected her growing influence across Africa, particularly through initiatives designed to strengthen women’s leadership and foster collaboration across borders.
Many recalled the success of the African Women Colloquium on Development and Awards, an initiative she founded to celebrate outstanding African women and promote conversations around development and inclusion.
The platform eventually expanded beyond Nigeria and gained international recognition, including support from high-profile African leaders.
Pastor Mercy Macwilliam’s Message of “Rest”
Earlier in the programme, attendees listened attentively as Pastor Mercy Macwilliam delivered an exhortation titled “Rest.”
Drawing from biblical teachings, she reminded mourners that while death brings sorrow, those who have fulfilled their purpose find eternal rest in God.
Her message offered comfort to grieving family members and friends while encouraging them to celebrate a life well lived rather than focus solely on the pain of loss.
Praying for the repose of Dr. Gupar’s soul, Pastor Macwilliam urged attendees to continue the good works she championed during her lifetime.
The exhortation set a reflective tone for the evening and became one of the most memorable moments of the programme.
A Call for Women to Continue the Mission
Throughout the event, speakers emphasized that Dr. Gupar’s life should serve as a rallying point for women committed to leadership, unity and national development.
Several tributes highlighted her ability to connect people across ethnic, religious and professional divides. Others spoke of her role as a mentor, peace advocate and bridge-builder who consistently encouraged collaboration over competition.
One speaker described her as a “seed” planted in the hearts of women across Nigeria.
“She is a seed whose life has touched the hearts of women across this nation. There is something God intends to raise among women in Nigeria through the legacy she has left behind.”
The speaker further stressed the critical role women must play in shaping the country’s future.
“The advancement of the nation lies in the hands of women. We have a responsibility to this nation.”
The remarks received widespread applause and reflected one of the core values Dr. Gupar championed throughout her life: that empowered women are essential to national progress.
More Than a Farewell
Earlier, in her welcome address, Rtn. Evelyn Hauwa Onyilo, a veteran broadcaster,former National President of the National Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), and respected advocate for women’s rights and development, encouraged family members and friends to accept the painful loss with faith and courage, reminding them that life ultimately unfolds according to God’s divine will.
Her remarks underscored the evening’s broader message of hope, resilience and gratitude while drawing strength from the remarkable legacy Dr. Gupar left behind.
She noted that although death is painful, the impact of a purposeful life remains long after the individual is gone, encouraging attendees to celebrate Dr. Gupar’s contributions to society rather than dwell solely on grief.
As the programme drew to a close, prayers were offered for Dr. Gupar’s family, friends and associates. Many attendees were visibly moved as words of comfort and encouragement filled the hall.
Yet despite the tears, there was also a sense of determination.
Those gathered were united by a shared conviction that the values Dr. Jophia Nanker Gupar stood for—service, faith, compassion, leadership, unity and the empowerment of women and young people—must not be allowed to fade.
Indeed, for many present, the most fitting tribute would not be the speeches delivered or the tears shed, but the continuation of the work she dedicated her life to pursuing.
As mourners departed into the Abuja night, one truth remained undeniable:
Dr. Jophia Nanker Gupar’s journey may have ended, but her impact will continue to inspire generations across Nigeria and Africa.
