The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists NAWOJ today joined other women groups and associations in a rally to appeal to the National Assembly to pass the Special Seats Bill into law.

The massive solidarity March was held in front of the National Assembly Abuja.

In a statement by the President, Aisha Ibrahim and Secretary Wasila Ladan, NAWOJ said,

the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) proudly salutes and celebrates the courage, resilience, and unwavering commitment of Nigerian women who marched in solidarity to the National Assembly in support of the Special Seats Bill.

“Today’s historic demonstration is not just a march—it is a movement. It is the loud, united, and unmistakable voice of Nigerian women demanding equity, justice, and fair representation in governance. It is a powerful reminder that democracy can not thrive when half of its population remains underrepresented.”

The statement added that for decades, women in Nigeria have contributed immensely to nation-building across all sectors, yet their presence in elective offices remains alarmingly low. The Special Seats Bill is not a privilege; it is a necessary corrective mechanism to address systemic imbalance and to deepen democratic inclusion.

NAWOJ stands shoulder to shoulder with every woman, every ally, and every advocate who has taken a stand for this cause. We commend the peaceful, organized, and resolute manner in which the march was conducted. Your voices have echoed beyond the gates of the National Assembly—they have resonated across the nation, it added.

The Association urges lawmakers at the National Assembly to rise above partisan interests and act in the spirit of justice and progress stressing that the passage of the Special Seats Bill will send a strong message that Nigeria is committed to inclusive governance and the empowerment of women.

“To our sisters across the country: keep the flag flying. Let this not be a one-day expression of solidarity, but a sustained movement until victory is achieved”.

“History has shown that every major milestone for women’s rights was won through persistence, unity, and courage. This moment is no different”.

NAWOJ calls on all women’s groups, civil society organizations, professional bodies, and well-meaning Nigerians to continue mobilizing, advocating, and engaging constructively until the Special Seats Bill becomes law.

“We will not relent.

We will not retreat.

We will not be silenced.”

NAWOJ noted that until justice is done and equitable representation is secured, the struggle continues.
