Vote for Credible Candidates at FCT Council Chairmanship Elections- Princess Nikky Onyeri

Residents of the FCT have been enjoined to turn out en-mass to vote for the candidate of their choice at the February 21st 2026 Area Council Chairmanship elections.

They have also been advised to shun divisive politics of ethnicity and religious biases.

National Convener of the Forum of APC Female Aspirants, FAFAN, Princess Nikky Onyeri made the call in Abuja while reacting to a report that some groups of people are calling on people of Igbo extraction to vote for an Igbo candidate in the FCT Council Chairmanship elections.

She condemned such calls describing it as undemocratic and could fuel disharmony and totally uncalled for urging voters to vote for the candidate of their choice.

Being a card carrying member of the APC and major stakeholder in the Party, Onyeri said tribal loyalty, religious sentiment and social media hype must not outweigh reason, evidence and character assessment and called on voters to vote for the APC Candidate whom she described as a competent leader that would bring about development in AMAC.

As a top member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), she condemned efforts to sway voters along ethnic lines in the forthcoming Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) chairmanship election, saying democracy is about the people’s choice, not sentiment or coercion.

“Recently, we got the wind that some groups are encouraging Igbos to vote only for the Igbo candidate of the SDP. This is not democracy,” she said, referencing a message circulating online.

Onyeri questioned the legitimacy of such groups speaking on behalf of the Igbo people, asking, “Who gave them the mandate? Who are the Igbos that were consulted?”

The APC women’s leader urged Nigerians to vote based on competence, integrity, and ability to address national challenges, rather than tribal or religious affiliations.

She praised President Bola Tinubu for assenting to the recently Amended Electoral Act, saying it demonstrated leadership and commitment to transparency and accountability.

The group has warned against politicians using ethnicity or religion to seek power, saying such candidates and their parties should be rejected.

Onyeri called on voters to shun violence and support security agencies in ensuring peaceful elections, saying Nigeria’s progress depends on stakeholders dropping sentiment and addressing governance issues.

The FAFAN convener emphasised that democracy thrives when citizens prioritize the nation’s interest over personal or group gains.

“We must focus on choosing leaders who can tackle our economic and security challenges, rather than those who peddle ethnicity and religion,” she said.

The APC women’s group leader also commended security agencies for their efforts to ensure peaceful elections, urging citizens to cooperate with them.

As the AMAC chairmanship election approaches on 21 February 2026, Onyeri’s message underscores the need for Nigerians to make informed choices, free from manipulation and divisive politics.
