UMUAHIA, ABIA STATE — Nigeria’s drive towards a safer and more secure nation received a significant boost as the Honourable Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (Rtd), OFR, commended the Executive Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti, OFR, for his strategic commitment to strengthening national security through the construction of the newly commissioned Nigerian Air Force (NAF) Administrative Complex in Umuahia.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony attended by Governor Otti and the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, the Defence Minister described the facility as a shining example of productive collaboration between federal and state authorities in advancing Nigeria’s security architecture.
According to General Musa, the project underscores the critical role sub-national governments can play in supporting the Armed Forces and creating an enabling environment for peace, stability, and development.
“National security is a shared responsibility,” the Minister stated. “While the Armed Forces remain constitutionally mandated to defend the nation, achieving enduring peace and stability requires strong partnerships among all levels of government, security agencies, and citizens. This facility represents a vital investment in the operational effectiveness, planning capability, and readiness of the Nigerian Air Force.”
The Minister noted that modern military operations depend not only on combat capabilities but also on robust administrative infrastructure that enhances coordination, personnel management, intelligence processing, and strategic decision-making.
He praised officers, airmen, and airwomen of the Nigerian Air Force for their unwavering commitment to safeguarding Nigeria’s airspace and supporting joint military operations against terrorism, insurgency, banditry, kidnapping, and crude oil theft.
In a message that highlighted the importance of positive civil-military relations, General Musa urged Air Force personnel deployed to Abia State to serve as ambassadors of peace and professionalism.
“I want to charge the Air Force personnel coming here to make Abia State a better place. We do not want to hear that you are causing problems for the civilian population. Abia is good—make it better, and ensure your presence brings peace and safety to the people,” he said.
The Minister linked the commissioning to broader security efforts across the South-East, referencing the recent 60th anniversary commemoration of the late Major General Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi and the maiden South-East Security Summit, both of which focused on fostering sustainable peace and regional stability.
Reassuring stakeholders that discussions from the summit would translate into concrete action, General Musa pledged full implementation of agreed security strategies.
“The South-East Security Summit will not be just another talk show. The resolutions reached will be implemented to guarantee long-term peace, security, and economic prosperity for the region,” he affirmed.
Governor Alex Otti, in a keynote address titled “Security Is a Right,” reiterated that the construction of the Air Force administrative facility reflects his administration’s unwavering commitment to protecting lives and property. He also expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for facilitating the establishment of a Nigerian Air Force presence in Abia State.
Governor Otti emphasized that security remains a fundamental right of every citizen and a prerequisite for sustainable economic growth, investment, and social development.
Also speaking at the event, the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, thanked the Abia State Government for its remarkable support and assured that the facility and other assets entrusted to the Nigerian Air Force would be effectively utilized to enhance security operations.
He noted that the strengthened military presence would improve surveillance, rapid response capabilities, and overall security coverage across the South-East region.
The commissioning of the NAF Administrative Complex marks yet another milestone in the growing partnership between government institutions and security agencies, reinforcing a shared commitment to peace, stability, and national development. For many observers, the project stands as a model of how visionary leadership and strategic collaboration can contribute meaningfully to building a safer Nigeria.
