ABUJA, Nigeria — The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to transforming the Nigerian Army University Biu (NAUB) into a world-class centre of excellence for military education, technological innovation, research, and national capacity development.
The assurance was given by the Honourable Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (Rtd) OFR, during a high-level meeting with members of the University’s Governing Council at the Ministry of Defence Headquarters in Abuja.
Addressing the delegation, General Musa described NAUB as a strategic national asset with a critical role in preparing both military personnel and civilians for the evolving demands of modern security, technology, and leadership. He emphasized that the institution remains central to the Federal Government’s broader vision of developing a highly skilled workforce capable of responding effectively to contemporary security threats and emerging global challeng
According to the Minister, sustained government support will be directed toward strengthening the university’s academic capacity, expanding its infrastructure, and enhancing its ability to produce graduates equipped with cutting-edge technical and operational competencies.
“NAUB occupies a unique position in our national development agenda. As Nigeria advances in an increasingly digital and technology-driven world, we must encourage members of the Armed Forces, staff of the Ministry, and the wider public to take advantage of the innovative academic and technological opportunities available at the university,” General Musa stated.
In a significant move aimed at closing critical skills gaps within the nation’s security architecture, the Minister disclosed plans for closer collaboration between the Ministry of Defence and the Armed Forces of Nigeria to maximize the 30 percent admission quota reserved for military personnel. The initiative is expected to provide more service members with access to specialized education and professional development opportunities tailored to modern defence requirements.
A major highlight of the engagement was the shared commitment between the Ministry and the Governing Council to embark on an extensive upgrade of the university’s infrastructure. Foremost among the proposed projects is the establishment of a state-of-the-art Centre for Military Performance Management, envisioned as the first facility of its kind in Africa.
The proposed centre is expected to serve as a continental hub for advanced research, strategic leadership training, performance evaluation, and military innovation, further strengthening Nigeria’s position as a leader in defence education and professional military development across Africa.
Earlier, the leader of the delegation and Pioneer Pro-Chancellor of NAUB, Lieutenant General Tukur Yusuf Buratai (Rtd) CFR, commended General Musa for his visionary leadership, unwavering dedication, and strategic contributions to strengthening Nigeria’s defence and security architecture.
General Buratai noted that the Minister’s commitment to institutional growth and military professionalism continues to inspire confidence within the Armed Forces and the broader national security community. He also expressed appreciation for the Ministry’s support for the university and reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to academic excellence, groundbreaking research, innovation, and service to the nation
