History will be made on July 1, 2026, when Rotarian Olayinka Hakeem Babalola formally assumes office as President of Rotary International, becoming the second Nigerian and second African to occupy the prestigious position in the 121-year history of the global humanitarian organisation.
His emergence marks a defining moment not only for Nigeria and Africa but also for the worldwide Rotary family. He follows in the footsteps of the late Chief Jonathan Majiyagbe, SAN, who served as Rotary International President in 2003–2004 and remains the first Nigerian and African to have held the office.

Addressing thousands of Rotarians and guests at the Rotary International Convention under the banner of #Rotary26, President-Elect Babalola delivered a deeply personal, inspiring, and visionary speech anchored on the theme “Create Lasting Impact.” His message reflected Rotary’s enduring values of service, peacebuilding, leadership, and community transformation.
A FAMILY BUILT ON SERVICE
Babalola’s address began with an emotional introduction of members of his family, whom he described as inseparable from his Rotary journey.
From his wife, Precy Babalola, an accomplished lawyer and Rotarian, to his children, mother, siblings, and extended family members who have all embraced Rotary’s ideals of service, Babalola painted a picture of a household where humanitarianism is not merely encouraged but lived daily.
“My family has not only supported my Rotary journey. They are my Rotary journey,” he declared.
Recalling how he first met his wife at a Rotary event in Port Harcourt, he described service as the foundation upon which their family values were built, inspiring generations of Rotarians and Rotaractors within their family circle.
HONOURING A LEGACY OF LEADERSHIP
In a touching tribute, Babalola honoured his late friend and former Rotary International President, SangKoo Yun, whose philosophy of leadership as “one link in a strong, unbroken chain” resonated throughout the speech.
The metaphor of the chain became a recurring theme as he challenged Rotarians across the globe to strengthen Rotary’s legacy by adding new links through service, leadership, and membership growth.
THE MOMENT ROTARY CHANGED HIS LIFE
One of the most compelling moments of the address came when Babalola recounted an experience from his early years as a Rotaractor.
Participating in a literacy project designed to help adults learn to read and write, he witnessed a woman read her own name for the first time.
That singular moment, he said, transformed his understanding of service.
“It redirected me,” he recalled. “I was not simply a young man with opportunities anymore. I was a young man with a responsibility to extend those opportunities to others.”
The story encapsulated Rotary’s power not merely to change communities but to transform the lives and perspectives of those who serve.
BEYOND SERVICE : CREATING LASTING IMPACT
At the heart of Babalola’s message was a challenge for Rotary members worldwide to think beyond projects and activities and focus on sustainable, measurable outcomes.
According to him, Rotary’s true success lies not only in what it accomplishes today but in the enduring transformation it leaves behind.
Whether through education, healthcare, youth development, or economic empowerment, Rotary’s interventions must create lasting positive change that survives long after projects are completed.
“Create Lasting Impact,” he explained, is not simply a slogan but a call to ensure that every Rotary initiative leaves a permanent mark on individuals, families, and communities.
PEACEBUILDING AS A DELIBERATE MISSION
A significant portion of the speech focused on Rotary’s role in advancing peace.
Babalola emphasized that peace should never be viewed as an accidental outcome of development efforts but as a deliberate objective woven into every humanitarian intervention.
Drawing attention to Rotary’s “Pathways to Peace and Prosperity” programme in Colombia, he highlighted how local communities affected by conflict are being empowered through conflict resolution training, economic development initiatives, and reconciliation efforts.
He challenged Rotarians worldwide to evaluate every project through a peacebuilding lens.
“We must ask ourselves: Does this create the conditions for peace?” he said.
The statement underscored his vision of Rotary as a catalyst for trust, understanding, and social cohesion in an increasingly divided world.
RENEWED COMMITMENT TO POLIO ERADICATION
Babalola also reaffirmed Rotary’s unwavering commitment to eradicating polio globally.
While significant progress has been achieved over the years, he warned that the fight is not yet over.
Highlighting innovations such as the use of needle-free jet injectors in Afghanistan, he praised the determination of healthcare workers who continue to reach vulnerable children despite difficult circumstances.
With global funding pressures mounting, he urged Rotary members and partners not to relent until polio becomes history.
Every vaccinated child, he noted, represents another step toward fulfilling Rotary’s promise to future generations.
Growing Rotary’s Global Family
Looking ahead,
Babalola challenged clubs worldwide to intensify efforts toward membership growth and retention.
Supporting Rotary’s ambitious target of reaching 1.25 million Rotarians and 125,000 Rotaractors by 2030, he encouraged clubs to surpass their previous membership achievements.
Each new member, he noted, represents another opportunity to transform lives and expand Rotary’s humanitarian footprint.
“Find your best year for membership growth and retention. Then do better than your best,” he urged.
A PROUD MOMENT FOR NIGERIA AND AFRICA
Babalola’s ascension to Rotary’s highest office is a source of immense pride for Nigeria and the African continent.
His journey from Rotaractor to Rotary International President reflects decades of commitment to service, leadership development, peacebuilding, and humanitarian impact.
As he prepares to lead one of the world’s most respected service organisations from July 1, 2026, to June 30, 2027, expectations are high that his tenure will inspire a new generation of leaders committed to making a difference.
For many Nigerians, his election serves as a powerful reminder that leadership rooted in service can transcend borders and influence global change.
As Rotary enters a new chapter under his stewardship, Babalola’s message remains clear: the greatest legacy is not what we achieve for ourselves, but the lasting impact we create for others.
