The Nigeria Union of Journalists FCT Council has announced plans for its 2026 Press Week, set to commence from May 16 to May 22, with a series of activities focused on responsible journalism, healthy living, and democratic accountability ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Themed “2027 Election: Defending Nigeria’s Democracy in the Age of Disinformation,” the week-long programme will bring together journalists, policymakers, civil society groups, and media stakeholders to address the growing threat of misinformation and the role of the media in safeguarding Nigeria’s democracy.
Activities lined up for the Press Week include a medical outreach in partnership with Nizamiye Hospital, a mental health awareness walk, a public lecture and awards ceremony, a secondary school press club quiz competition, and a grand finale jean party.
The activities will begin on Saturday, May 16, with a free medical outreach at the NUJ FCT Secretariat in Utako, where doctors will provide health checks and consultations for journalists and members of the public.
A Walk for Mental Health is scheduled for Monday, May 18, from the Julius Berger Roundabout to the NUJ Secretariat, while the flagship Public Lecture and Awards Ceremony will hold on Tuesday, May 19, at Transcorp Hilton Abuja.
The lecture, expected to attract over 1,000 participants, will be chaired by Mohammed Bago, with Abdullahi Ganduje serving as co-chairman. Former House of Representatives member Ndudi Elumelu is expected to deliver the keynote address.
Other dignitaries expected at the event include the Inspector General of Police, media executives, political leaders, and stakeholders from various sectors.
The awards ceremony will honour outstanding journalists and notable Nigerians for excellence, professionalism, and contributions to national development.
Chairman of the NUJ FCT Council, Grace Ike, called on journalists and stakeholders to participate actively in all activities, describing the 2026 Press Week as “a week of impact, reflection, celebration, and professional excellence.”
The Press Week will conclude on Friday, May 22, with a grand finale jean party at the NUJ FCT Secretariat in Utako.
