Profile of New IGP, Tunji Disu

Tunji Disu, born 13 April 1966, is the new Acting Inspector‑General of Police, appointed by President Bola Tinubu on 24 Feb 2026 to replace Kayode Egbetokun. He hails from Lagos Island, holds a B.A. in English Education from LASU and two master’s degrees—Public Administration (Adekunle Ajasin University) and Criminology, Security & Legal Psychology (LASU) .
His police career started on 18 May 1992. He’s commanded the Lagos Rapid Response Squad (RRS), led the Intelligence Response Team (IRT), served as Commissioner of Police in River State and later in Abuja (FCT), and was Principal Staff Officer to the former IGP. Disu’s training includes small‑arms smuggling courses in Botswana, internet‑fraud training at Cambridge, and strategic leadership at the Police Staff College, Jos.
Tunji Disu, rose through a series of key posts—DPO in Ago Iwoye, Ikare, Owo, Elimbu and Elelenwo; commander of SARS and anti‑kidnapping units in Rivers, Ondo and Oyo; and 2IC of Rivers State CID. He led Nigeria’s first AU peace‑keeping contingent in Darfur (2005) and, from June 2015 to August 2021, commanded the Lagos Rapid Response Squad, rebranding its officers as “The Good Guys”. After heading the Intelligence Response Team (IRT) in 2021 and serving as Principal Staff Officer to former IGP Kayode Egbetokun, he became Commissioner of Police in Rivers State and later in the FCT. He was promoted AIG on 25 March 2025, redeployed to Force CID Annex, Alagbon, and on 24 Feb 2026 President Tinubu appointed him Acting Inspector‑General of Police.
